Games crash.
My COD4 and Assassin's Creed games keep crashing my computer. They'll lock-up, the sound will skip for a second while video is frozen, and I have to use the reset button to get out. No CTRL+ALT+DEL or ALT+TAB, or ALT+F4 will work.
The post-processing on these games looks very similar, so I'm wondering if they're built on the same game engine. I haven't really looked to heavy in to that, but in every other application, everything runs fine.
I've got my fan set to 100% and my GPU is not overclocked. I don't get any artifacts, so I'm thinking the GPU itself should be mostly ok.
Any input is appreciated.

i can at least tell you focus that they are definitely not the same engine. cod4 is built on a proprietary infinity ward engine (that was also used for cod5) while assassin's creed is another proprietary engine.
post-processing is easy to make look similar because the math behind those shaders is all the same, just the level that the developers take it to.
however, i have had issues with cod4 freezing up on me, and it happens probably at least once a night. i have no solution for it, other than to wait it out as it tends to eventually un-lock up. tf2 does the same thing to me.
assassin's creed i believe just has been bug ridden on pc from the get go.

better to be thought a fool than to open one's mouth and erase all doubt.

i believe that also helped my problem a little by reinstalling my sound drivers. also, another common sound problem is make sure that if you have a realtek onboard chipset to disable and remove all drivers for it. i think that was a cod4 issue when the game was released back then.
