well played a few and cant account for strafejumps but with the speed i got out id say strafs are obsolite ( pardon my language )
it looks awesome but i didnt like the way they worked up thwe fire/killrate with this speed and rates on those small maps will result in chaos
i played it for some 4 1/2 hours straight. i started to like it.
And surprisingly, i ran into a a jolt dm server with 12 playing lag-less.
And since the nepalm gun isn't my favourite at all, just use it in dm. you will laugh with tears lol, just drop some 3-4 balls around the corners and go way, frags come by themselfs lol.

There are still situations where it is needed for map control in order to get certain jumps off. I've seen people who are really good at it...considerably faster than anyone else and they can do some crazy s**t on the CPL maps that wouldn't be possible with running and jumping it's just more of a trick jump only rather than a way of getting around, which is actually a lot like CPL was playing already.
hehe focus man, i'm sorry for my sarcastic post lol, it wasn't ment in a bad way, altough i must admit i have a different sense of humor.
Even with that i didn't agreed with some things in your post, but hey each with his opinions.
As Equals said, strafing can be interpreted as tricking and from my experience quake is a much more complex game in terms of moving than doom 3.
For me, being mainly a quake player (played it since quake 2 was out with a break between 2000-2002), doom 3 has a much straighter movement, while quake has a much more complex one.
The mapping in quake is also different, which will force you to do things that in doom you cannot do. For example by cutting the map using mid-air platforms in order to control a map, in which you must strafe really well. One of the difference between d3 and quake's strafing is that in quake if you make a small mistake, you can still recover from it, whitout loosing too much speed, while in doom, it's over, you have to start again.
And in my point of view, the acceleration is the most important part. As long as you can speed up very quickly (let's say 600ups on the second jump), then you can pretty much overcome any unwanted problems.
As for quake 4, i found the crouch sliding a very good way of helping you mentain speed while cutting the corners. Simply said, not only you can to tricks, but you can also outrun your oponent giving you a hudge atvantage.
Now something short which is not directly pointed at you.
I have a few friends who are playing doom 3 and they can strafe very well in there, but they are having difficulties in quake. why? because they are actually bunnyhopping, which is <still> seen as strafing by some.
to play quick, you need to be able to think quick. bunny hopping.. hmm i still can't do it good enough. I'm an average bunny hopper, but I get the job done so who gives a s**t.
i just cant wait for defrag to come to q4 now....i dont know if any of u know coldrun run from q3a defrag...ive done it in 12secs...but yeah its time to get back into q4!!

Yeah and OMFG CeTuS is the man with that stuff. Crazy watching that sorta stuff. They still make vids for q3, nothing but fun to watch. Coldrun took me a while to actually get done and was really fun. Most of those though were wayyy above my head to do. I like the beginning of cold run where you do the strafes up the step things...
