Cheap Hardware Upgrade...

Post by BobMarley! »

I know i mentioned that I wanted to buy a new rig, but with a baby it's kind of hard.

So with that my current setup is..

P4 HT 2.66
1GB Ram
ATI 9600SE
Creative XFi

Since I play most of my games at 1280x1024 cause of my monitor, I was thinking of buying a 7950AGP card (basically a 7900GT modded). I was going to add another gig to the ram.

Sound alright to you all? I know the proc will need to be upped, but I have seen p4 socket 478 3.4-8 proc's for like 50 bucks new on craigslist. so all in all i would be spending about 400 but i'm sure that the improvement would be great. any thoughts?

yeah... i know i know. i am trying to minimize the work put into it. the simpler the better. so how does the 7950 fare in quake/d3 and dx games? my old 6800gt got great rates with 16pipes and 370 core. the 7950 is 500 and 24 pipes no?

yeah... everyone keeps telling me to pcix it but with the advent of a 7950 in an agp flavor i'm going to stick with it. i don't need to play unreal tournament in dx10.. dx9 will be just fine :)

allows me more time to save for something nicer in the end. 7950 agp for me!

Okay... I pretty much am going from a 68GT to a 7950AG. From what I understand the 7950 is much like the 7950 PCI-X. Now correct me if I'm wrong but the card is pretty much teh same without the PCIX interface. By that I mean that the 7950 AGP is the same as the 7950PCI. Now I do understand that PCIX does allow for a higher bandwith but it seems that these agp cards (7950AGP, 7800BLISS, and 7800GS all are still within the maximisation of the AGP bus drive)

In other words, the AGP bus has really not been used to it's complete full potential. PCIx IS great but I don't plan on running an SLI rig any time soon, so the bandwith issue is non existant for me.

7950APG only 8x (Bah) 7950GT pci-e has high clock speeds and then that AGP card and it has better profence why not just keep up with the times man? PCI - E where it's at and by the time PCI - E x2 comes out APG will not be around ever and PCiI - E will be even cheaper when PCI - E x2 comes out
