IF the icecaps weren't melting then it would be the opposite effect and we would be moving in to the next ice age.
the earth actually moves slightly closer to the sun each year aswell so that actually accounts for the majoirty of "global warming"

Mikey's fun facts for the day.

1 person produces the same ammout of carbon dioxide as a car per year.

The best way to reduce co2 levels is to cut down trees and paved them over with tarmac.
Tarmac actually locks up more carbon dioxide and trees don't produce enough oxygen to make them worth having around.

We don't produce as much carbon dioxide as the dinosaurs did.

Strange but true . . .

yep, its not an ACTUAL thing,Every summer people freak out and just say OMG its global warming when a bunch of ice receeds or falls into the ocean and we have an uncanny 1* rcord higher then last year.
what is actually happening is that the earth is wobbling on its axis, slightly affecting weather. This is mainly do to natural conditions and human damning of major rivers, streams and lakes. more water then normal is being held in the upper hemisphere. Which in turn is causing this natural wobble to increase, so every summer, we will ocasionally tilt closer to the sun resulting in a slightly hotter season.
now does that sound any more farfeched then global warming? This is also a reputable HYPOTHESIS along with Global Warming.
Sure the icecaps may be melting faster then before, but they are also leftover ice and snow from the last ice age, which was melting to begin with.

damn, I really do learn something new every day!

At the same time, I think we could all be working together to help, at least, reduce the effects of global warming, by just using energy wisely, not polluting environment, stuff like that.

Throughout the history of the earth, there have been multiple ice ages. The earth was covered in ice, then the ice melted. Then ice took over again, and it melted. It seems to be a natural process. Now what caused global warming back in the days of the Wooly Mammoth? I'm sure they didn't drive cars and pollute with factories. Yet, the ice still melted.

Just a thought to ponder.

Hehe it's good stuff and a good debate this :)

I don't agree with "human pollution". I think we should cut back on trash and recycle (we recycle glass, cans, paper and cardboard in our house.)

Sab bought up a good comment on precession which is well worth any one reading up on (too long to explain here)

The onlything I disagreewith is the term "global warming" which is used as a buzz word the by the media. I'm not denying thefact we've had hot summers but I don't think you can attribute all this just to humans.

In the case of the dinosaurs, if you think of a field of cows all farting and releasing carbon dioxide in to the atmosphere - increase that to a field of brontosaurus and theres a hell of a lot more methane heating up the environment.

I was just throwing some facts around about the global warming myth as most people seem to use the same old "cars and cutting down trees" is the problem.

We should all work together as one "world nation" regardless of skin, race or religion and help stop pollution. Educate "third world countries" stop them burning coal and give them neuclear power (all this Iran bs smacks of WOT bs) or give them the means to use renewable energy. In the meantime we should focus all out energy needs on renewable sources.

pfffff let me finish my coffee! too early for ranting :P

Wow, just got back into town, and NOT enough coffee yet, but I'll chime in here. It's proven that the earth goes through cycles, hot, cold, warmer, cooler, wetter, drier, etc, etc. I'm not proposing that our efforts in polluting the planet have no lasting effects, but when comparing the crap WE, spew into the air, every year, a single volcano erruption, can do exponentionally more damage/pollution, it would seem odd, to take all the blame ourselves. Sure we should get our act together, as we only have one planet here. Just like everything else in nature, the climate is cyclical, not static. Trending, etc, is expected. Some good reading here:

all im gonna say on this is,(im not going out to offend anyone, this is what I belive) I'm not sure if i belive in a higher power or not, but I know i dont believe in the Christian God. Based on events in history, and how their system,(especially the Catholic) it seems to be more of a system of fear, and greed then religion and prayer. I belive the Bible to be a good Story book. Yes it has good lessons for us all to learn, but i think thats all it is. In "PROVEN" history monks actually formed the bible off old stories that were never written down, so they changed over the years.
I actually prefer Islam to christiantity, for one i belive cristianity derived from Islamic. It is also more about Preyer and faith, then money and greed, sure there are those who belive that the only way for a perfect world is to eliminate all who do not belive in Allah. And just because you see all those Islamic on TV blowing stuff up, doesnt mean that Islamic is a bad religion. They are extreamists who are doing that. There has been Christian extremists, and others as well. Its just everything is blown out of proportion in modern times.
The Only religion that makes ANY Bit sense to me is budism, which i would like to look more into.
Now i have nothing against any religions, for my parents are christians, and i have a really good Jewish, Catholic, and Muslims friend,(kind of funny) but I believe what i believe and no one is changing that.

Religion was created by man. You can't trust "man" nor become a slave to "mans" way. Think openminded, become a freethinker ;]

I don't like religion. I see it as a crutch for weak-minded people. They can't believe that we gradually evolved over time into what we are now, even when there's evidence to prove it. It has to be God that created everything.

I don't like to harp on religious people though... I have Muslim, Catholic, Christian, and Mormon friends in the marching band.

P.S. - Buddhism does sound pretty cool, but I think I'm too unfocused to get the whole Nirvana thing. :D

a crutch? people rely on God and their faith to get them through life everyday. especially for those who aren't as "lucky" as us (handicapped, abused, etc), God is the only thing they have. wars have been fought throughout time over God and religion, and now people think they can look at it as if it's some secondary and insignificant element of life? think again.
